Casualty and Project Management
During his career as a Marine Consultant R.J.Gains has gained extensive experience of working with the IOPC Fund to set up and manage a claims Office in South Korea following the extensive pollution arising from the HEBEI SPIRIT incident. In this role, extending over a 5 year period, he represented locally the IOPC Fund and Skuld P&I Insurers. During this time he established and chaired liaison committees with the Korean Government and the many claimants affected by the pollution incident. The project required an ability to adapt and develop practical solutions to significant challenges often on a very short time frame and with an understanding of the sensitivity of the situation within the local population.
Following, this involvement in Korea and close working relationship with the Korean Government, he was invited by the Chairman of the independent SEWOL Investigation Committee (SIC) to head up a multidisciplined team of experts to make a full and detailed investigation into the cause of the tragic incident in which the SEWOL ferry capsized and sank with the loss of 306 persons.. A full and detailed forensic investigation was completed and reported to the SIC.
Having being involved in the investigation of many casualties over the years, R.J.Gains has seen many changes within the marine industry including the escalation in the size of container vessels and the challenges which they present to casualty response and salvage operations. A project of particular interest is the extensive work R.J. Gains has done to develop new solutions to assist in the management of these complex and challenging casualties.

Multi Disciplined Projects
Whilst R.J.Gains & Co. is an independent firm, during his career in marine consultancy, the majority of which was with a large multi disciplined organization, R.J. Gains has worked on many multidiscipline cases involving the combined expertise of Naval Architects, Marine Engineers, Salvage Experts, Cargo Scientists, Metallurgists and Fuel Scientists.
This approach has provided an opportunity to develop a broad understanding which would not be possible in less enriched team environments.
R.J.Gains & Co. maintains a very close work relationship with many of these experts across a wide range of disciplines and looks forward to working with them on multidisciplined projects in the future.
